Eight years per lifetime.
A term limit is a legal restriction that limits the number of terms a person may serve in a particular elected office. For example, the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution says that no person can be elected President of the United States more than twice. Term limits are a particularly important issue in the United States.

The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution says that a person can only be elected twice. However, if someone takes over as President and serves 2 years or more of the term, he or she can only be elected one more time:
Amendment 22 - Presidential Term Limits
1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

The shorter of 2 terms or 10 years. So if a Pres is killed more than 2 years into his term, then his VP can finish the term (for 2 years) and go on to run in his own right for 2 more terms. (However, one can't be Pres for 2 terms and then run again promising to vacate the office after only 2 years....which keeps Bill Clinton off the ballot in the future.)

President Johnson took over for Kennedy when he was assassinated. Because he was taking over for another presidents term that was more than half over (more than 2 years) Johnson could have served two more terms. That would be true If Kennedy was 2 years and 1 day into his term. If Kennedy was 1 year and 364 days into his term when assassinated then Johnson could only serve one more full term.
The maximum number of full terms a president can serve is 2.

Eight year in ones lifetime. The only president that was elected for a third term was President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He died in office during the beginning of his third term, and vice president Harry S. Truman became president.

The maximum amount of years one person can serve as President (post Roosevelt) is ten years. This would allow a person coming into office in middle of others term two more full terms in this person came into office at mid term. Example Nixon only served half of his second term he could have ran for another term as Gerald Ford could serve two full terms
