Ask about local gay bars and scout them out. General rule of thumb, psychology dictionaries are a tad bit more precise, transvestites are gay men advertising which side of the coin they prefer. Crossdressers might be there too, but they tend to be heteros with a fetish for women's clothing. In some ways they are the same, yet there is a distinction you will want to watch for. BTW, some are really good, so look and listen closely. The transgender folk will be giving the honest effort to sound female, but the transvestites usually have that obvious falsetto that they are proud of--they want to resemble women, not be them.

Watch or rent an Eddie Izzard DVD. He's a great comedian and he also gives a great explanation of what it's like to be a transvestite. And he should know, the man wears heels better than I do! lol

Some gay bars have open mic night. Where guys dressed as women,"transvestites get up on stage and sing. Just check for a club in your area.

What is it you hope to accomplish? That would depend on where you go. If you looking for friendship then the Internet is the best place, if your looking for something else, some of the other suggestions are fine, just be really careful.

Try going to Gay bars, they will usually hang out there where the can feel more excepted in a non-intimidating social setting.
