go to wal-mart and look in the hard ware/plumbing department you can get a universal replacement kit for under $10.00 with directions to install. The float it attached to an arm that is attached to the overflow valve/stem. The handle on the outside of the toilet is attache to an arm that normally has a chain running down to the plug/flush valve. Just remember to turn the water off to the toilet bowl and flush to drain the water out to make it easier to work on.

The float attaches to the ballcock valve. These are cheap and pretty easy to replace. Go to the hardware store and purchase a new ballcock valve and a flexible line to go from your toilet to the angle valve on the wall.
Now go home, turn off the angle valve and hold the lever down until all the water runs out of the tank. With a bucket and a rag, soak up the remaining water in the tank and squeeze into the bucket. Unscrew the line coming out of the angle valve and where it connects to the toilet. Then unscrew the nut on the bottom of the tank that holds the ballcock valve in place. Remove the old ballcock valve and fit in your replacement valve. Attach the new flexible line to the bottom of the ballcock valve and angle valve. When everything is tight, open the angle valve.

Go to your local hard ware store, they can sell you the float and the float arm. The float arm unscrews out of the rest of the assembly and just take it with you so they know what length you need. Then when you get it home, just screw it back in and it should be fine.

Lowe's or Home Depot will have a complete kit that cost around $15 or just the part for less.

i believe you mean the float arm. the bar that holds the float on one end and connects to the valve on the other?

it's hard to buy the arm by itself. you may have to just buy the entire kit.

Take the part with you to the hardware store and show it to the people working there; they'll steer you in the right direction.
