I've always stacked mine right side up. Guess cause that's what my mom did. My gf hasn't tried to change it, so guess she is used to it that way too.

I k eep them right side up, I hate the way they smell when they are upside down, especially if they weren't totally dry when they were put away. There shouldn't be any dust inside the cabinet, that's why there are doors on the cabinet and the reason we keep things in the cabinet in the first place.

My wife has an exquisite selection of crystal tumblers and engraved glasses. We also have some nice custard cups, Chinese porcelain cups, etc. I do not plan on serving a whiskey sour in a dirty glass. The easiest way to take care of them is to wash by hand in liquid soap and water and then rinse carefully. Wiping them with the wrong cloth and leave a stain. I use paper towels on the outside and let the rest drip on a dish cloth, then I place in the dining room cabinet.
You know what? I never have to dust them if they have been used in the last month or two. I also never have to polish them. Silverware is different, though. I rarely allow my wife to take out the fancy cutlery, the usual stuff is nice enough. I like a crochet tablecover over a brown tablecloth with brown, folded napkins. My wife says, "That is so austere and old-fashioned, Adam!". Well, I say, "It's better than those stupid cows and pigs people use!"

We keep our glasses upside down because we don't use them as often as we do plates and bowls. A glass in the back of the cupboard may sit there for a month or longer before we get to use it whereas our inventory of plates and bowls turns over about every 2 days.

I think its to keep the dust out but they should really be stored the other way. The rim is the weakest part of the glass and if its stored on the rim there is more chance that the glass will be chipped or cracked.

It is easier to store glasses that way and stops them from being knocked against each other when removing them from cupboards. Plated take up space, plus they don't store upside down too well on top of each other, they slide and that makes them vulnerable to breakage.

Before dishwasher the dishes were not always dry when put away. Up side down drained them.
Plate/bowls, too hard to pickup when upside.

well some people stack there glasses and cups. I know of people that do the same with the bowls. If they arn't dry enough it helps dry them out and keep them clean and then they are also easier to find.

I like this question.
I can see a debate following this question.
I can see both the Pros and Cons to why glasses are set the way they are.
My question is this:
Has it been scientifically proved which idea is better?

Bowls and plates are easier to wipe off, and more difficult to extract from the cupboard when upside down.

Sometimes.. the glass is more stable on it's lip... especially for storage.. so when you reached in and bump it, the chances of them toppling over are less likely.. bowls and plates don't have that issue.
