The total square feet is about 30 including backsplash. The main top is a little under 9 feet. I went to Home Depot and Lowes over the weekend to look at some options and more were in the $2000 range.

What material are you looking for? There are laminates that look a lot like granite, and are very inexpensive....less than $10/sf. If you want something better, try Corian or SileStone. You may also get a better price by going through a fabricator rather than Home Depot if you are wanting granite.

Speaking from experience I know that replacing counter tops are not cheap. Most expensive ways out there are using granite, quarzt and marble. More cheaper are using formica and tile. If you would like to redo the countertops in your kitchen but are daunted by the price, and want to be really really really cheap, a short-term solution is to cover the existing countertops with contact paper, which comes in a variety of decorator colors and styles. But if you are into diy, you may want to look into a nice tile countertop. See http://www.thetiledoctor.com/repair/replacecountertops.cfm

Tile it yourself. Go to an arts and crafts store to find mosiacs. Peel off the laminate countertop (assuming you have that) and tile overtop. It is time consuming, but cheap and will look great. Plus you can design it however you want.

Well you could do a resurface of the countertop with a local company that will resurface the countertop for you so it basically brand new after they done.
