I have an advent 7038 laptop currently running with 512mb of PC2700 200 pin so-dimm memory ( 2 x 256). Today I bought one 512mb PC2700 200 pin so-dimm memory module and replaced one of the banks on my laptop with this new module. However, when I turn the laptop on it beeps 4 times and doesnt do anything else.

Ive seen from other sites that this means that the first 62bits of operational memory are corrupted or the timer is not opperational however it works perfectly when I put the old 256mb module back in. Any ideas?

could be a bad stick of ram or your laptop can't support the configuration.

1. Try switching the modules around
2. try running it with just the 512MB of ram
3. Check the bios to see if it's set up for dual channel or single channel mode. If it's set to dual, then the configuration you currently have won't work. In dual, both sticks of ram need to be identical
4. Check to see if both sticks are the same type and have the same settings.
5. Check your manual to see if your laptop can handle that configuration of ram.

It may be damaged. When you work on things like this it not a bad idea to get a "Grounding Strap", they sold at Radio Shack, but, the salesperson may not know what it is, look in the section where the Connectors and Soldering supplies are.
The Grounding Strap keep you from damaging the RAM with Static Electricity from your body.
Last thing, be sure the Laptop can upgrade to this much memory and be sure this is the correct RAM MHz and everything. That about all I know.

I guessing you have to configure the bios system BUT i can be wrong. It could be that the RAM is damage. Go back and complain.

However it is best to ask professional people to do it rather then doing it yourself because you have more chance of damaging the laptop.

It means you have a bum stick of memory installed or have installed the wrong type! Take the original stick out and try just the new one! If it works, consult your mobo manual to find out what slot is the next available slot.

Either the RAM you bought is faulty or has been exposed to static or it may not be compatible with your laptop.
