Laika, which Wikipedia tells me is Russian for "barker" and is also the name of a breed of Russian dog.

Laika, a former stray, died several hours into her flight, from stress and overheating. I've always thought this was a very sad story...

The first dog in space was "Laika", a Russian dog !! Story has it that the dog died midway through the flight since it could not resist the extreme heat conditions.
