Maybe it just me but first they make millions of dollars to star in a movie or record an album and let's be honest some aren't very good at that... Then they get nominated for an award or they present an award and they walk away with thousand's of dollars of free stuff, they are given free designer clothes and jewlry (well that they usually have to return)but the freebies are things normal people can only dream about. When something major happens in the world they go on tv and ask for peoples hard earned money but it's only a few that actually put up their own money. We have so many poor and hungry in our own country...it would be nice to see them leave a swag room and go up to a homeless family and say "here, sell this and maybe it will help you to get back on your feet". The telthons are great but you make millions and are given everything free of charge, how about really giving back & you don't have to go to Africa to do it, there are people in need right here in your own back yard

I completly agree with you and half the time I don't understand what their doing. They can't complain about the homeless here because there not doing anything to help them at all. We have war veterans who don't have jobs and don't have work so become homeless. Is that the way we treat our war heroes. This whole world is just messed up.

We hold these people up to high esteem based on our fantasy viewpoint of them from the roles they play. While they used to have the good graces to accept their rewards and to maintain their image (when the studios required them to act a certain way contractually) they now feel free to use their celebrity to stand on a soapbox. What makes an actor any smarter than the man in the street....I say nothing, yet we listen with rapt attention to Danny Glover, Sean Penn, Bono, Barbra Steisand and others while they give their opinions. We should take advice from people who can't do a real job?

I disagree with the majority. Most celebrities do give away to charity and I'm not just talking about the children in Africa. Theirs money donated to breast cancer and helping children with mental disorders etc. I think it is time for people to stop blaming celebrities for everything, every celebrity is not alike. They are people that make lots of money doing a job, you can't be mad at them for that. It's not their job to save the world and in the end some are helping a cause. Help is help, one is not more important than the other.

Yes, it is.

However, the consumer needs to take responsibility for this behavior. Fans of these celebrities lavish them with praise and loyalty by paying exorbitant fees for mediocre offerings.

My theory is that people who are idolized for an ability which is, in reality, unimportant in the overall scheme of things (e.g., singing, acting), become enamored with the idea that they can use their popularity as a bully pulpit to attempt to make an important contribution to the world.

They want to make this contribution on the grandest stage that they can find, so they usually attempt to support a global cause or need.

Most of them are unconcerned with the daily struggles of the average American.

We shouldn't idolize these people. We should only respect them for their limited ability in a narrow range of aesthetic requirements.

Don't expect them to be any more sympathetic to other people's problems than anybody else.

I'd rather focus on what I personally can do with my limited abilities and resources to help my fellow man in some way.

I agree with you...I mean all the Africa stuff is important too but you are right that there is so much to be done in our own country. I've told my friends how the real reason we keep up to date with what celebrities are doing isn't because we idolize them or anything but rather they comfort us by showing us that we're actually not that bad of people...haha.

I completely agree with you. We have made these people into demi-Gods, and its disgusting. And yes, it really bothers me that they expect other folks to pony up to help their causes, but they are not willing to lead by example and use some of their mounds of cash to help out.
