Both actually.
heh, Technically, a sattelite is anything orbiting around anything else.
Humans have been launching sattelites up there for decades now. There are Thousands of "complete" sattelites...and probably there are even more pieces of junk sattelites i.e. junk, bolts, scraps, garbage from broken old ones. Most of the stuff you will see through a scope, or while on your back sky gazing will be communication sattelites.
The USAF tracks as many of these things as possible in order to be able to prevent collisions with space craft.
No one is going to be able to give you an accurate # of "working" sattelites even, becuase there are hundreds of unlisted spy sattelites in addition to the "known" communication sattelites up there.

there is extremely some room around the earth, so it really is not likely that a satellite tv for pc would hit yet another satellite tv for pc in orbit. also, for the reason that many satellites are geosynchronous, this signifies that they're going to stay interior an identical position above the earth; also reducing the possibilities of satellites hitting one yet another. The orbit of the satellite tv for pc is determined through physics and mathematics, to examine the point above the earth the position the satellite tv for pc will be geosynchronous. As on your very last question, satellites do not stay away from area debris, as far as i understand. i trust that turned right into an issue with the Hubble Telescope contained in the previous.

There are >2500 man made objects orbiting the earth.
Here is a link from nasa that tracks various ( several hundred) satellites around the earth.

There must be at least 100 active ones.
GPS has about 20, then there is THE space station and oodles of satellites in geo synchronous orbit (TV and phone) and many spy satellites of different nations. 100 may be on the conservative side.
