How would the situation have changed if the facts were researched and presented more carefully?

my best friend and true love has decided to believe lies about me based on what some "nut job" has been saying about me and it hurt....if she had researched her facts she would know damn well none of its true.......i feel like dying over it but i wont

In general, you can use any partial information or asymmetric information game. I mean this in the 'game theory' sense -- but it applies to real games. In Poker, people base actions on false informatino or on what they believe to be true. The stock market is another example.

My son's dad's sister knows of a person who thinks he would have died in a car accident had he worn a seatbelt, so she totally ignores the research that says that the net effect of seatbelt usage is that more people would live and doesn't wear a seatbelt.

Things about common medical conditions (ex. acne, lice) and the old wive's tales about it being because the person is "dirty."
