Most Americans are poorly informed about current events because they don't want to know. American media now is praising ignorance. This is especially evident when a man who claims to have been appointed by Jesus to the presidency, can't pronounce nuclear or any number of other words, nor speak intelligently about current events (hell, he claimed he doesn't read the news...) is allowed to lead the country because the people who have opposed him talked intelligently.
The media is interested in only ratings; thus they cater to the lowest common denominator and dumb down their broadcasts so that the people watching it don't need to think, just memorize 30 second blurbs.

We Americans are among the most ill-informed people in the world. We can't name the U.S. Secretary of State, but we can tell you everything you want to know about our favorite NASCAR driver!
Our priorities are atrocious. We refuse to read news about the U.S. foreign policy, but we'll devour a "People" magazine to learn about Christie Brinkley's cheating husband or Britney Spears' love life.
The media has dumbed-down its news and entertainment features to appeal to an 11-year-old mentality because most Americans aren't smart enough to deal with anything more substantive. We can't read, don't know how to spell (proof of that is right here at YaHoo! Answers) and don't care. As long as we make enough money to meet our monthly payments, we don't give a tinker's damn about anything else. -RKO-

What would happen if Americans really knew what was going on? That would upset the balance of power. Those who actually know what is going on and are pulling the strings would lose control. Ignorance is bliss? Redirect their attention just like with children so they don't fight or cause trouble.

Well uh they're americans. They're so full of themselves and just live in their own little world. They like sticking their noses in things though,wich are better off without america anyway, but ask who the president of South africa or spain is or whats going on in Buda-Pest. They won't have a clue. ( Have to add that it's not all Americans but most of them)
