I read a number of solutions on this particular topic because I purchased a used iPod and wanted to get rid of scratches. What I ended up using was a polish for auto paint finishes and it worked pretty well. It specifically lists plastic as one of the things you could use it on. Brasso seemed like it might have been a little much for the plastic on my 5G iPod video, but it would have been appropriate for the shiny silver on the back. The more you buff it, the better it's going to look and the scratches won't magically disappear after one application. You actually have to put some elbow grease into it. Good luck.

try popping into your local car paint shop
use the same stuff that they use for removing scratches from car paintwork
its a very light polish/abrasive

Use a very fine polish and rub carefully. If you don't have any one hand, try some toothpaste and a cotton cloth.
