In sociology it is important to remember that "gender" and sex" are not the same. Gender is generally regarded as a learned process (boys are supposed to hide emotion and participate in reckless acts while girls should learn to cook and play nurturing games with dolls).
Social Constructionists view gender as a social construct, that is gender is entirely based on the way children are socialized...i.e. children are taught gender.
Essentialists view gender as going hand in hand with biology...i.e. boys act like what we know as boys because they have penii.

gender is different than sex.People are born biologically male and female but they acquire a gender identity within the social relations.
