We pay a great deal in taxes for the "pleasure" of running motor vehicles. It appears that very little of this money is ploughed back into building and maintaining our roads.

Do other countries spend as little as our government on our roads.Or am I just imagining that our roads are bad ?

According to my experience, the best maintained motorways can be found in Luxemburg, I ve never seen any patchwork there and espcially when you re crossing the border between Luxemburg and Belgium you see/feel/hear an enormous difference (Belgian motorways are extremly bad).
But even if the motorways aren t as good as they were in the past, I d still say that Germany has the best roads and especially the best road network (I m quite sure it also is one of the densiest).
Even less important regional roads are in a very good shape- compared to English, French, Belgian, Spanish, Italian, Dutch roads. Swiss and Austrian roads are also mostly in a good shape but the network is not as sophisticated as the German one is.
Finally it s hard to tell if Germany spends a lot more money on their road network as there, the road funding is shared between the federal government (only motorways are exclusively maintained by federal funds), the "Laender", regions and communities.
Tried to find out what the goverments are paying per mile/km of road but without success

No of course they are not the worst maintained in europe.

Due to their design, British motorways are regarded as some of the safest roads in the world.

You've obviously never been to Eastern Europe.

They've had roadworks in the same area of Basle, Switzerland for over 20 years. They were there when I went on Guide camp in 1992 and they were still there on a recent holiday. So I suppose everywhere is the same really. Roll on the days when we can get from A-B by jet-pack...

Hello,

don't make me laugh :D Have you ever been to Hungary or Romania ? You just lose your concentration for a microsecond and you have left one of your tyres in a ditch which was 30 cm deep :O. In Romania, it's safer to go next to the road, because there you don't expect a road at least ...

You wanna see bad roads. Go to California. Traffic is so bad they daren't close a road for repairs. Same in Las Vegas.
Our main roads ain't that bad. At least we do get some repairs done.

You're just imagining it. Classic Anglo-centric paranoia. Yes, stuff in the UK sucks, but it sucks a whole lot worse in most other places in the world so quit bellyaching and learn to appreciate how lucky you are to live in such a developed and wealthy country.
