Tonnage The unit of measure used in air conditioning to describe the cooling capacity of a system. One ton of cooling is based on the amount of heat needed to melt one ton (2000 lbs.) of ice in a 24 hour period. One ton of cooling is equal to 12,000 Btu/hr.
This link will cover tonnage and other things also.

1 ton will cool or heat about 650 square feet.
My upstairs of my home is 1975 square feet and I have a 3 1/2 ton unit cooling/heating it. 3 x 650 = 1950 and the 1/2 is because I live in a high humidity state.
Both of the answers above me are correct also as they actually answer your question.

A ton is a measurement of heat transfer. One ton is equal to 12,000 BTU's per hour. It is derived from the amount of energy that it takes to melt one ton of ice in a twenty four hour period.

Air, (believe it or not) has weight. The "ton" refers to how much air an air conditioner can move. A "2-ton" moves 2 tons of air in an hour. A "4-ton" moves 4 tons of air in an hour.
