I'm going to give you a REAL good answer to that question. One thought, I personally do not live on welfare -- I had 2 planned pregnancies - on child is grown and one about to turn 18, I am guessing you are young and have not yet run into any major catastrophies of life yet. You may have no idea what can happen to you in the real world -- like when cancer hits, or you have a drug addict steal from you and your account wiped out and you lose your home (and many many other bad things that ricocheted off of that) ---- AND THEN you are in deep trouble. Now that you are, you can work your butt off but if your credit sucks, you have nothing - your car breaks, your rent doesn't get paid because you have to get to work, etc. etc. (I was a legal secretary for many many years too) --- okay, my husband went back to college -- yes, in his 40s to see if there was a way to get us ahead -- he was on a government grant - yes, he was getting straight As (there's no way we could afford it on our income) -- BUSH said "I DID NOT CUT THE PELL GRANT PROGRAM" the EXACT same day my husband's was cut. THIS IS WHY IT IS "EASIER" --- we haven't found a way now although we've tried. Maybe if your mommy and daddy are paying for your college education or something.....I don't know -- but you are obviously taking SOMETHING FOR GRANTED and you probably should look around you and give a BIG THANK YOU to the person or persons who ARE helping you. BECAUSE I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT YOU ARE NOT WORKING AND PAYING FOR COLLEGE (ALL OF IT AT THE SAME TIME, PLUS A PLACE TO LIVE) on your own. I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT. You thinks it's really easy for everyone to get an education? WELL.....YOU ARE WRONG.

People on welfare make (after welfare and working 2 jobs) $15,000 - $25,000 at best.

College education (what you need for just about any job these days, especially ones that pay more than $7 an hour) costs roughly $5,000 - tens of thousands of dollars per semester. ($10,000 per year). You do the math. Not to mention that, if you were working 40-60 hours a week at minimum wage jobs you don't have the time to go to school, or even to search for better paying jobs that you are qualified for.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum. You have kids that are handed diplomas that their parents bought for them from prestegious colleges. They get jobs as executives handed to them at companies their friend's parents own/run. And they are the ones complaining about the poor people getting hand outs...

Stereotypically it is easier, but not all people who are on welfare are uneducated. Some are put on welfare to survive like a single mother working the best she can at her job with 2 children to feed and no child support, or people who have been laid off and are looking for good jobs to support their family but positions aren't available to fill, or they are disabled after an injury. The elderly also have to have welfare for not enough money generated from retirement to cover prescription cost.
Yes, there are some people who abuse the system and don't even try to do anything different, but there are also people trying to survive in this world that need to use it, and maybe it is short term.

It'll be just like it is here in UK.

Some want to be on benefits and get everything paid for because they're lazy and have the wrong attitude.

Some would rather not be on benefits but do not believe in themselves enough, they think they're too stupid to do anything.

Some, like me, are desperate to get off benefits and are doing everything they can think of to get out of the system and support themselves. I was young and naive and thought my boyfriend would be there for me when I had our baby soon after graduating University. He wasn't. So it's been just me. And I have lots and lots of education and qualifications, and I've taken some bloody awful jobs to keep our heads above water. It's not easy juggling work and childcare, especially when childcare costs just about all you earn! He's now in school, so it should all get a bit easier now. But it's been tough.

There are plenty out there trying to help themselves and having a damn hard time of it. Don't tar everyone with the same brush. Sometimes, sh*t happens and life isn't easy for everybody!

Some people are caught in the system. If someone lives in subsidized housing (free), recieves food stamps and welfare lets say roughly 500 per month, then its almost impossible to work or go to school with small children.

That person would loose housing, loose food stamps, and welfare, while still having to pay for day care, food, utilities, rent and transportation. With little or no income the family would then be homeless.

I can't imagine anyone finds it easy on welfare, and not everyone is clever enough to get an education. People for all reasons end up on benefits and there are probably those who are generally lazy and don't want to work.I think that if you are educated with a good job then you are very fortunate that your intelligent enough to get where you are.

To put it politely (*() happens and sometimes people get sick and can no longer work. Sometimes they are educated but lose their jobs and society may think they're too old and ' incompetent' to find another job at the level to which they were used to.

I find your question typical hard nosed right wing conservative bs. Your life ain't over yet sweetheart and you never know what is going to happen to you or your's .

Be a little less arrogant and ignorant and display some of the supposed Christianity and family values you guys love to spout off about.

some folks don't think they CAN take care of themselves and feel trapped.
Some are completely lazy, and would rather take a free hand out than have any self respect.

Some folks are just fighting to stay alive and not become homeless. The welfare system is broken because it DOES allow people to become dependent on a free handout from Uncle Sam with no incentive to get off their butts and be hard working citizens like the rest of us.
