Even though I know that I get 1/10 of a cent worth of gas difference in the tank, why is gasoline priced this way? What is the logic or madness behind 9/10 pricing?

Well basically its all just marketing. It has the same principle as why you use .99 on items instead of 1.00. It makes the price look cheaper. The gas station always uses 9/10 so they can put 2.99 9/10 and actually get 3.00 instead of 2.99. Greedy gas stations!

Same reason prices at the store end in .99. It's a way to get an extra penny (almost) per gallon. Not a big deal anymore but when I was a kid and it was 47 cents a gallon then it was a big deal.

The gas station owners know more about psychology than you do. Most people will not "see" that 9/10, so they think they are paying less for their gas.

In other words, its a rip off

Same reason why stuff ends in .99 instead of .00 -- plus the U.S. let's them price the gas on tenths of a dollar.

So it LOOKs like a penny less a gallon & therefore more of a deal.
2.99.9 looks a lot less than 3.00 a gallon, even though it is a neglible amount

I realized that the other day. So gas just went to 1.99 today. SO technically its 2.00.$ WOW! What a rip off

I think it goes back to early radio and TV advertising when they would say things like "You too can own this deluxe dishwasher for under $50.00!" and the price was $49.99. I guess it stuck...
