The bottom line is that people tend to believe what they want to, and just don't like facts.
On the rare ocassions I have had an arguement with someone, they usually start attacking my ego ("You always have to be right") rather than counter my point with other facts.
I think people don't like facts because they don't retain many in their memory, so they don't know how to deal with them, but they always know what they like, so choice is easier to deal with.
and thats a fact!!! (lol)

Fact isn't always fact Jack! Scientific reasoning is somewhat boring if you ask me. I'm just happy when people try to answer a question the best they can rather than the others who ask the most stupid, inane and sometimes vile questions. The same goes for some of the answers.

Insofar as Y!A is concerned, yes, people will take their personal choice over facts most times. Everybody notices this, but it's not really that surprising. I am no different except that on a few occasions I have chosen a best answer that doesn't stroke my ego because I learned something and it was clearly the best answer.

i think you're right. I don't really care so much about it here on answers, but its common in society as a whole. I have heard a lot of people defend their choices as "well, its my choice!" or when i'm discussing politics or ethics with someone "well its my opinion!" even if they have totally contradicted themselves.
I understand that our society is individualistic and suspicious of authority, but thats no excuse for total relativism. Differences in ethics are defended as personal choices similar to ice cream preferences. Science and mythology are presented as being two equal theories, deserving equal classroom time.
Not all theories are equal, not all beliefs are equal, not all opinions are equal, not all ethics are equal. Pretending that they are has become very common in our society, on both the right and the left, and I think its a dangerous trend.

Aside from the fact that your question is so garbled that it comes across as pseudo-intellectual, when you could have just asked 'Why do people prefer to know people's personal preferences rather than facts?', your 'About me' section on your profile contradicts what you purport to be your position. Here is your 'About me' section:
'About Me: To be honest, I'm not much into asking questions or answering them. My interest here is in the witty, brilliant and sometimes rude answers that people hand out on 'answers' because they are so much entertainment.'
Hopefully, you will find my answer witty, brilliant, and possibly rude, enough but if you don't, well that's your personal opinion.
I know the facts of the matter.

It is the old problem- people prefer style over content- explains why politicians get away with what they do- because it is is aestheitically presented they don't look at the deeper issues- just like some of the people choosing their best answers!

It is one of the big problems of your society. No one follows their reason . People are too selfish and lack consideration for others. I feel very strongly that morality and reasoning are closely linked. This has broken down in the West. It must have once existed or have you always been uneducated barbarians ?

It would appear so from many of the answers on this forum.
I have a friend who, every time I state a fact, says, "That's just your opinion." I think this is the opposite of your questions. He refuses to acknowledge the truth, because he doesn't agree with it..

Everyone lives an illusionary life. There are some things that we just accept as fact and when something occurs that disagrees with these basic assumptions, we refuse to acknowledge its validity.
