The "ceiling" is not the complete answer for this question. There is a specific guideline as to exactly "Where" on the ceiling the vent fan is placed, meaning in a very specific location, not just the ceiling in general. Can anyone help clarify this?

Where I live, you must place it above the commode, but the code does not specify "exactly" the location. I would also assume it would need to connect to the duct work for proper exhaust. But, it also waives the requirement for a bathroom exhaust fan if there is a window in the room housing the commode.

My city posts all of its codes on their website. Check to see if yours does as well.

Sorry to bump heads, But the Main use for a Bath fan is NOT to remove moisture (remember the fan is electrical and if put close to the shower it would have to be GFCI procted) but the most common place is above the toilet, the NEC makes it clear there are no Outlets(this includes fans and lights) to be within 3 feet of the face point of a tub(unless GFCI protected), most inspectors don't call you on it because of the size of most bathrooms doesn't give much room.

The approximate center of the bathroom. The purpose of the fan is to remove moist air from the shower. If possible, I prefer the units that have a light and fan in one because it creates less clutter on the ceiling.

The center of the room, or next to the shower. It needs to be close to the shower, because the MAIN use of the exhaust fan is to pull the humidity OUT of the room - to help keep paint from peeling, mold from growing, etc. You might not want it centrally located OVER the shower, for fear of water splashes getting into the fan and shorting out the motor, so near the shower, in the center.
