i had my son at 17, i had an epideral , it helped out alot. but you will still feel the contractions, so youll know when to push, but u wont feel the vaginal pain as bad. plus you dont strain as hard with an epideral so the vagina wont be torn as bad either.they spray numbing meds on ur back now so youll never feel the needle go into ur back so dont worry, it didnt slow my labor down at all, it was good in my case but u should run it with ur doctor.

With no judgement to you i will tell you that my sister was 15 when she had her baby and i can say that she didnt handle the experience very well. She wasnt emotionally or physically ready to birth a baby. On the other hand and to answer your other question. I had a baby on April 4th, she is now 5.5 months old. I am TERRIFIED of needles no matter the size or where they go. I was induced so the pain was far worse then if i wasnt induced. The pain was sooooo intense that i took the epidural and to be 100% honest i didnt feel a thing after receiving it. I had no more pain, i couldnt feel ANYTHING. As for the needle it was a tiny little prick and it was over. The fear of the epidural overwhelmed me from week 38 of my pregnancy but i did it and so can you.

Wow, you are young, but it sounds like you're working hard to make things work. Good for you!!!
I say go for the epidural, if possible. With my first I went too fast and didn't get a chance. Honestly, it wasn't that bad, but I don't remember it all that well...it's all a little fuzzy because I was in pain. With my second, I was induced and able to get an epidural. I'm a big needle wimp...I was scared to death to get one, but honestly, when the contractions get bad, you won't care! I loved it because I didn't feel a thing and I remember everything because I was pain free!! The dr had to keep his hand on my belly and tell me when I was contracting so I could push. It was so wonderful!!! lol It's really a personal choice, but don't be afraid of the needle. That needle will be the least of your worries!!
Good luck with your baby...and life! :)

A lot of women get one. It slows labor down though. its healthier than pain killers, since those will be shared via the placenta with the baby.

If you dont think you can handle it natural, then you should certainly consider an epidural.

Theres no reason you shouldnt keep your baby and graduate school. No one should ever tell you you're making a poor choice. Your choice is for life, and for your child, and thats a better choice than most adults make. Anyone can decide to grow up, certainly a 17 year old. Its young, but its not unable. You can be as smart as you want to be. Iam proud of you for sticking to your cause.

Talk with your OB about all your choices during delivery. Read up on them on the internet or in books.

The best thing you can do it be educated on labor and delivery, and remain calm. your labor will be as bad as the amount of fear you have about it. Its only one day out of your life, you can handle it. Your body was made to have babies. Even at your age. You'll be just fine, no matter what you choose :)

I was 18 when I got pregnant and had my son and I said that I wasn't going to get an epideral but at about half way through the contractions I decided that I wanted drugs and it is a good thing I got it when I did b/c the urse was about to leave for the night and then I had to have an emergency c-section and if I wouldn't have got the epideral then they would have had to put me to sleep.

I had my first two daughters at age 18, and no they're not twins. Their father who is now my husband and I have a wonderful relationship so don't let anyone tell you anything! It's hard but as long as you are responsible and raise your children properly it doesn't matter. I used an epidural with my first and loved it, I slept through my whole labor and they had to wake me up to push, it was great. Didn't work so well for the next two, but the first one was awesome! You need to make this decision on your own though, some people swear by them and others wouldn't get one if they had too! Good luck to you and do the right thing, raise your child right!

I've had four kids with 2 epidurals. They didn't work well, but everyone is different. And don't worry about what people tell you about being young. I'm a mother of 4 and certainly not that young and it's hard. But there are times it's easy and wonderful and that's why you have kids. The hard parts get forgotten pretty quick if you just stay upbeat and go with the flow.

I had my son a month after I turned eighteen. I didn't have one. Everything went fine. Made me want another in two years. Two years later I had a girl. Had her completely natural like my son. The pain was so bad, I decided that if I ever had another, needle in the back, here I come! I was extremely proud of myself for having my children natural. It really depends on your pain tolerance. knowing what I know now, I would have had one with my daughter. I thought my insides were coming out and I was dying. Good luck to you. And don't let anyone tell you that you and your boyfriend can't make it. I got married at seventeen. my husband and I have been married six and a half years now. Still love him

I had one with my first. I hated the needle, but it was soon over with. I could still feel a lot though. (not the norm, most women don't feel a thing) With my second there wasn't enough time so I didn't get one. Of course it hurt, but i made it through. She was born special needs and had to go to a neonatal ICU and I was walking miles and miles around the hospital campus the next day! My recovery over all was faster. With my third I didn't want one cause I wanted the fast recovery but I almost had to have a c section so they had to give me one. I don't recomend it. My recovery time was WAY faster without it, and I didn't have to go through the big needle in my back. You have up to a certain point to get one though. If it starts to get so bad you can't handle it, ask for one. This happens all the time.

I didn't have one. I was dilating so fast. Instead I got this nice drug, I foget the name of it, that put me right to sleep. I only woke up during the really big contractions. If the labor progresses fast then I would use another alternative drug. Epiderals are not for everyone.
