Then there is public entertainment: carriages, movies (Rex who trains/owns horses for movies: black beauty, horse whisper etc) and other events.

Then there is personal profitable use: showing/breeding/raising for profit.

Then there is personal hobbie: showing/breeding/raising as a non-profitable hobbie.

Different farms have different uses for them. Some farms use horses to plow the land. Some farms use horses to herd cattle. Some farms just use horses for pleasure riding. On my farm the horses have it real easy. For the most part they are "lawn mowers"......We do ride them every now and again. BTW people I have Amish neighbors so they still use their horses for plowing and all the farm work. Horses are a major part of their daily lives. They even drive their buggys into big cities lol (to go to wal mart) seeing a horse hooked to a buggy doing the work of the old days is everyday here!

There's a difference between a farm and a ranch, so if you are really talking about a farm, there is less use for a horse on a farm, as they can be used for plowing, or for pulling carts to haul produce (any type), and also their manure is excellent fertilizer for crops. And of course there is always riding.

On a farm not much anymore as tractors plow much faster and more efficiently.
On a ranch raising cattle they are used for herding and sorting cattle or when you need to move cattle from one area to another or round them up to castrate and vaccinate horses are used for that.
They are used in feedlot operations so you can ride through the pens and check cattle.
They are used for riding the fence lines and checking to make sure the fence ins in good repair.
They are used for pleasure riding and showing and breeding for money.

They can be used for a lot of things on a farm. Working cattle being the main use. Moving large objects, checking fence, even working in the fields if you don't have heavy equipment. Although, you don't see them doing too much of these things anymore.

basically everything. Getting around the farm without poluting air, their manure is good fertilizer, rounding up sheep, cow, geese, pigs... and in the old days they were used to plow the fields. Horse's are essential for farming!

Well, back in the day they helped with the plowing and what-not. That's how the farmers got around, they rode a horse. They used the poo too. Spread it on the veggies and they get bigger.

Now they're just used for riding and herding mostly.

Farmers use them to round up their livestock. If they can't get an ATV into the place the livestock are located, a horse is perfect.
