26 September 1917 was the opening day of the Battle of Polygon Wood. This was the fourth of eight phases in what becamse known as the Third Battle of Ypres (31 July-12 November 1917). The initial assault on 26 September 1917 was carried out by a force of 20 Infantry Divisions (each consisting of around 15,000-18,000 men), including the Australian Corps of 4 Divisions. Although not widely remembered today (outside WW1 buffs), the scale of battles such as Polygon Wood certainly set today's operations in Iraq and Afghanistan into context.

Also, on 26 September 1944, the Soviet Army occupied Estonia, while in Holland, the surviving troops of the British 1st Airborne Division were evacuated acorss the Lower Rhine, thus ending the Battle of Arnhem.
