To be honest, I get dumbfounded (nonplus, speechless with surprise) and most of the time I try to use rational approach of getting to understand why the other party has resorted to confrontational approach with me.

If my reasoning and application of logic fails to have the other party to come to 'negotiation' approach, then sadly I do get caught in the trap set for me and lose my calm and composure.

I am trying hard to overcome my shortcoming in such situation and would be watching the responses you get here for my benefit too!

LOL...I do this for a living. I'm a 911 operator! Try to speak to them in a non threatening manner ie. an even toned voice, respond or question them in a way that wouldn't be perceived as threatening. Try to be understanding even if what they are saying to you sounds rediculous, ludicrous, or just plain crazy. This requires a certain talent...lol. Most are over emotional at the moment of being confrontational and just need to calm down a bit before thinking rationally. Some just aren't capable of thinking rationally. You can either deal with people in a calm manner or walk away and say nothing.

Insulting their lack of education or intelligence usually works for me. Obvious flaws or genetic predispositions are also a pretty good target as well as pointing out certain behaiors. Discussing the causal variable or event that led to the confrontation almost never works for me - especially when dealing with those that talk much faster than they think.

It depends on whether or not you like opposition and debate..if so, get involved in the conversation...ensuring it's a healthy one and of professional tones. Otherwise, walk away. Also consider the relationship with this individual.

It is obvious that something I say or I do is unacceptable to him or her so that they are confronting me. It is their perception of me. Possible that he or she is not alone and many others too have such views about me . But they all may not be as confrontational as him/her.

I would do an introspection to find out what is it that I am lacking. May be he /she was right. may be I need to improve in such and such areas in interpersonal relationship.
