The study of molecular structure is the most efficient path to being able to predict the behavior of a compound. This is an understatement.
Think of a sample of a chemical as a whole world of people. The chemist is like a space-alien seeking to understand the behavior of the human race. Creating a picture of a human is an important step!

if you would have posted this in science you would be getting better answers. anyway we study molecules so we can learn about the world around us and how things really work. until you can track things on the molecular level you don't know how things really work.

The strength and weakness of bonds between molecules determines material properties.
