I hear it's a common practice in Miami Beach and not just on parties of 6 or more but for anyone. Has anyone heard of this happening any place else in US?

It is now the rule in Miami Beach because so many tourists are from Europe where that is the practice. (There are exceptions among small neighborhood places. ) It is increasingly the practice in Downtown Miami for the same reason. Always check your restaurant bill before paying in those cities to avoid making a mistake.

I was told by a manager at a chain restaurant that if your party is 6 or more the waitress puts the 15% tip on it and I live in a small town near Chicago. Now some average rastaurants want 20% .........I hate tipping I usually give 1-3 dollars for that is a lot of money per hour. I work too hard for my money and I make 6 digits. I figure if Madonna can give a small tip on a big restaurant bill and former Bulls guy Pippin didn't tip at all why should I.

I work in a restaurant on the Jersey Shore (very touristy in the summer) and we don't do that.. wish we did. Too many people (tourists, and foreigners) pretend they don't know how to tip correctly.. or even tip at all for that matter. I know the US isn't the only country you tip. Especially when you know you gave great service, spent a lot of time making sure everything was perfect, and they loved the experience at the restuarant.. and then you open your book to find ten dollars, on a 200 dollar bill. Big dissapointment. It is just unfortunate that the people who are legitimate, and know how to tip, are being punished in a way, especially if the service was bad. If you are going to tack on a tip, make sure your service is top notch.

No, it's not a common practice. When it does happen, it usually happens because the waiter thinks you are a tourist and don't know that you're supposed to tip. This often happens in NY, because a lot of tourists simply forget or are ignorant about the fact that the gratuity is not included in the price of the meal, as it is in other countries.

As a previous server myself, I actually imagine the top must be protected with large activities (6+). there is extremely some paintings that is going into it, and persons have a tendency no longer to tip share-smart on more beneficial communities. yet as an aspect be conscious... in case you sense your service wasn't deserving of the top it somewhat is protected, you could ask to speak to a manager. ninety 9% of the time, the governmentwill get rid of the gratuity if the customer is gloomy with the service. Even from time to time upload a loose dish or something on there. protected gratuity is only the institution's way of ensuring their waitstaff is being appropriately compensated. The minimum salary for waitstaff in my state is $2.33 in accordance to hour. would you paintings for that?

It is fairly common in big tourist areas, because they are dealing with people from all over, who are not always familiar with the local standards. Even though the tip is included, you do not have to pay it if you don't feel the service was worth the included amount.

It is being done in more high scale resturants. It is done because people arent tippng thier servers enough. Most waitstaff (depending on where you live) make around 2.15-5.25 an hour. Most people think throwing down a couple bucks is a "good tip" Pay attention to your server, did you get everything you asked for in a timely manner, did your drink ever get empty, did they aggrivate you while you were eating or checked on you just enough....
