I am looking for somewhere north, that is not too large and preferably not too hot. Somewhere safe with good jobs, a nice place to raise a family.

That depends on your budget, where you work, and what you like. San Francisco is a wonderful place to live, but not if you work in San Jose. Maybe you want to add more details.

That all depends on your budget, job situation, etc. If you would like to live in the Bay Area, consider suburbs such as San Mateo, Burlingame, or San Bruno. They are not too far from the city, but they can be somewhat pricey. If you have your heart set on living near San Francisco, but are on a very tight budget, consider Daly City or South San Francisco. While they are not the most exciting areas, you definitely will be able to find something in a lower price range. As you can tell, I am all for living in San Francisco. I would not recommend any place as highly as there in Northern California. Hope this helps!

Northern California is one of the most diverse places in the entire US. The are many different types of geographic terrain, micro-climates and extent of urbanization. The area ranges from very cool beach communities where the temperature never gets much over 70 degrees even in the summertime, to mountainous areas covered with huge redwood trees, to urban areas that are as dense as Manhattan, to rural areas that are very hot in the summer and remind one of the set of a 1950s cowboy movie. Also, housing prices can range from just expensive ($300,000) to unbelievable (multiple millions of dollars). You have your choice of sophisticated apartment living in San Francisco to suburban living in quiet, safe, communities with good pubic schools like Cupertino. It really depends on what you are looking for and how much money you are willing to spend. You probably should contact some local real estate agencies that operate over a wide area or better yet come on out for a vacation and take a good look.
