I bought a kit from Walmart entitled "Teach yourself to crochet". It included several crochet tools. All I had to do was buy the yarn and I was ready to start. It did take a little time to figure out from the pictures, but after one night, I was making chains pretty well.

My daughter and I took lessons last week and we both failed miserably. This week we are knitting our afgans. It proved to be much easier for both of us.
I did look at knitting websites yesterday and there are afgan patterns, knitting dictionaries to look up abbreviations etc.
Our public library has both knitting ahd crocheting how-to books so you might check out yours as well. We found that it is best to sign out several books because the how-to directions can be lousy.

Michaels the craft store has lessons that are not very expensive. Good luck. I have been crocheting for years and am absolutely addicted!!! It is very relaxing and there are so many cool things you can make!!!
