The government pays billions in additional health care costs in the UK, the States, and in Canada.

they have a responsibility to lower those costs by encouraging peopel to remain as thina nd healthy as possible. Take it easy, its not like they have the "Food Gestapo" kicking in doors and confiscating your chips and soda.

They are operating out of a genuine desire to see people live healthier. You can question their motives, but a healthier population makes for a healthier economy and body politic.

My ex wife refused to stop smoking when pregnant because her attitude was "when Doctors stop smoking so will I"

So I can understand the point that some people need to be led by example rather than accept the message being given out.

But just because some Doctors smoke doesn't make it advisable to smoke or any healthier or less damaging.

In the same way just because members of politicians families are deemed fat (or not) it doesn't mean that the government message or campaign is invalid.

My daughter was born deaf in one ear, so my ex wife obviously knew what she was talking about.

I think the point is that fat people make greater demands on the community than those people of normal weight. The primary cost is the NHS but add to this additional absence from work due to weight-related illness and the rest of the community has to pick up the tab. While similar arguments are applied to smokers, their diseases tend to strike later in life and are more than paid for by the duty and VAT on cigarettes and tobacco.

Tony Blair's daughter isn't fat! Not sure who you were looking at...or maybe you believe that the normal shape for a woman is size eight or lower, and not the average 14-16 that real people inhabit.

They are looking for something to blame and using scare tactics. I am overweight and have cancer. I hear on the TV everyday how "fat people" are more at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Everyone of my friends, who has high blood pressure and heart disease, is thin, and I've met dozens of people who have the same cancer I have and they are also thin. I'm not saying that I think being overweight is good for you but, the scare tactics being used are lies and when you lie people ignore any real warning you might give. You know, the old "boy who cries wolf" thing.

Anything the government can do to aid the health in the UK is OK by me.
If it means educating - not preaching - people and their kids about health issues, it can`t be that bad.......... can it?

After all, they are listening and acting on what Jamie Oliver has done for school meals.
And packed lunches prepared by parents :-) which mainly consist of crisps and other shite :-)

I agree that people should mind there own business. Having said that, it is the business of government to mind everyone else's business. Goverments are empowered for the greater good of the population they serve.

Well, the government is pointing this out because it's going to bankrupt them with all of the healthcare costs involved with obese people. Are you aware that with obesity comes diabetes, cardiovascular disease, increases cancer risk, and an earlier death in general?

I think it is the government's job to step in and try to help with this overwhelming public health epidemic.

I think there are bigger issues the government should be looking at other than how big a person is. Like when are they going to bring our troops home?

You are SO right! There is so much work to be done. Why focus on the chunky folks instead of doing the work?
