When I was a teacher, I always enjoyed the home made kind of gifts better than the 99 cent store junk. I feel that something the child made (With mom's help, of course.) had more meaning and expressed better how the child feels. That isn't to say that all purchased gifts are bad, but I could always tell the difference between something given simply because it had to be and something that the child really valued.
Ask your kids what they would like to do. They may have ideas that you don't know about. A number of times my own son has surprised me with ideas I never knew he had and the teachers knew after they unwrapped their gifts that they really came from him and not me. One year I had a student who could draw very well and she drew a picture of me in front of the class teaching including the items in the room around me, and framed it with my name handprinted on the side. It is one of my dearest possessions.
On a practical note, in case your kids aren't the creative type, I always liked getting things about my favorite interests. Find out what the teacher is interested in on a personal level, hobbies, etc. Get items geared to the teacher and not some generic "#1 Teacher" item. There are many craft places around where people make items on a personal level. You might get an item there.
Another thing I really appreciated was the year that I had a student whose parents owned a restaurant and they treated my family to one of their famous dinners. Find out what dining place is the favorite of the teacher and give a certificate that will allow a dinner out (Preferably not fast food, but a sit down, server brings the meal to the table type.).
Hope this helps.

pen set, teachers also use lots of rubber stamps , so ink blotters for those would be nice.Let the boys pick their favorite color.
Gift certifacates to a teacher Supply store.
You may want to look at some school xmas fund raising sales. They do have some nice gifts for cheap prices there for anyone.
Think of things you see your boys bring home from their teacher , stickers , cards maybe a nice stationary .Those will allow the teacher to communicate with the parents on her personal stationary .

How about something cheap from the spa. Or a body shop. For a female teacher that is.
For a man, I'm thinking a gift certificate. They can be so hard to buy for.

I always make good home baked things for my teachers. Usually a big plate of different kinds of holiday cookies, or if your up to it, there are some really easy ways to make candies, like peppermint bark( which is a favorite of my teachers) and also peanut butter cups, chocolate covered cherries make good gifts. Everyone loves a nice plate of homemade goodies.

depends on how much you want to spend. I ran across something at the Kangaroo store and bought one for my son. It was a extra large pink pearl eraser. On it it said for real big mistakes.
I gave it to him and told him there were no mistakes to big that he couldn't tell me and we get through.
He loved it and had me buy a couple more. He wants to put a note on them and give them to his teachers that says " thank you for helping me learn from my mistakes"
I only paid $2.00 each for them and we got 3 for his teachers and 2 for my other sons teachers.
Ive read someplace, that teachers refer something like that with meaning or something they can eat. Because alot of do dads add up quickly.

$5-$10.00 gift cards to Starbucks or a gift card to somewhere they like...maybe a deli/cafe like Panera Bread or a store you know they shop at. I have 2 kids in middle school and there are lots of teachers to shop for....Starbucks and Panera are always a big hit!

My boys make things for their teachers. Painted ornaments, pencil cups, worlds best teacher signs. My favorite was the year we bought terracotta flower pots, filled them with foam, the boys decorated the pots with paint. Then we bought a box of pens, floral tape and fake flowers, you attach the flowers to the ends of the pens, toss the caps and make sure the tip points down, then attach the flower to the pen wrapping floral tape all the way down. Teacher has a beautiful pot of "flowers" but always has a pot of pens at her disposal.
