So two answers here. If your question is "can I use the TiVo without service" the answer is no at this time. If your question is "can I connect the TiVo over the Internet instead" the answer is yes, in fact it works very well.

I do. My tivo box gives me an annoying nag screen everyday. It now says it's been 400+ days since it's plugged into a phone. I used a wireless phone jack that went through my power lines, but at my current house the pwer line so noisy that didn't work. You can't use your remote to order pay-per-view, but that's not a problem for me.

Yes and no.... It will work for 3 or 4 months without it then it will keep bugging you to plug it in. Before it wont let you watch anymore. I have the same problem with mine so once every 3 months a run a cord threw the house to the phone and hurry and make the call "which only takes 5 minutes" and call it good. So just go buy a really long telephone cord at Radio Shack or something and do that every so often.

I have a TiVo. It has not been connect to a phone line for almost two years, and it still works fine. You get daily messages asking you to connect, but just ignore them and delete them. You do need the phone line to do initial setup. But if your unit has been setup (anywhere), it no longer needs the phone. The phone line is used for two other purposes only: ordering pay-per-view through the on-screen menu (they can still be ordered over voice phone or the internet) and to activate software upgrades. You can get wireless phone connections that will allow you to connect to a phone jack without running wires. If you do that, make sure you get one qualified for modem use, not just voice.
