Eklavya was dedicated to being a great archer. He made Drona his guru by worshiping his image. When Drona asked for his fee it was to have Eklavya's thumb. He readily complied.

Eklavya is a model of devotion and sacrafice. He loved his master with all his heart.
================================

The above was the best answer.. yes. indeed. But, Why would a "thumb" given off make him be any "second" to arjun. I'd say, Eklavya could still used his "index" and "middle" finger together to make his thumb. When I do archery, I have performed equally or better with the arrow kept between my index and middle as I could between my thumb and the index.

So, why and where are the great indian argumentative minds?.. what are they doing to answer such technicalities in mahabarata. reasoning for negatives is one thing, factoring the positives is the best thing, but to advance mahabarat to new age, an emphatic answers to technical questions makes the story go a longer distance into the future.

I say it that Guru Drona was a great scientist of archery . he had to trained Kaurav n Pandav. Arjun the 3rd Pandav was a best Student of Drona. When Guru found an anther archery specialist, Eklavya was there who had trained Guru unpoetical through studding the action of Guru, a Ego born ed in his heart. He found that his thumb was the root of action. so he got that as his fee. that was Guru's crudeness.

Rohan, I hope you havent read mahabaratha properly... Arjun was not son of Surya, he was son of Indra.... Karna was the son of Surya.. Ok now to answer the question...

Technically speaking, the force that you will get when you hold the arrow using your thumb will be more than when you use middle and index finger. Also when it comes to speed, mounting the arrow in the bow will be quicker when you use your thumb. There might some other factors also which I missed out.....

It is never said that you cannot be an archer without your thumb... but in a war, yes the efficiency will be more when you use the thumb......
Hope this helps you.. Incase of any other doubts in Mahabaratha, pelase do get in touch with me...

There is a huge difference between performing archery as a hobby and performing archery to save yourself and your land i.e. for war. Performing archery though possible with your middle and index fingure, it does not give you the required strength. Moreover, over speed of attacking will also decrease.

I hope this answers why thumb is essential while performing archery.

It is only wast of breath, at this point of time.
Start a dialogue on how to end corruption, stop food adulteration,
stop faking life-saving drugs, faking passports, faking stamp papers... the list is long, life is short. What we have come down to ?
