The man who works 14 hours per day, sometimes 6 days per week, but makes a very comfortable living and is able to buy many luxury items, lives in a very fine home and drives a new car.

OR

The man who never has to work another day in his life because he lives off of interest on his savings BUT this income is limited so he is not able to afford many luxuries, lives in a smaller clean but older home and drives a 10 year old car.

All other things being equal, which man is more "free"?

Karrien: I have to say that avatar is more effective than mine. I actually feel physically sick when I look at it because it reminds me of "Pink Flamingos" The film I made the mistake of seeing in college and has NEVER LEFT MY MIND.
Anyway, I think you're basing your answer on hapiness, whereas I'm speaking about freedom.
The two certainly intersect at some point and where that intersection occurs is a matter of personal preference. In short I'm asking for your opinion or what matters to YOU.

The man who never has to work because of living off of interest. He has time and time can't be bought.

You left out one concept. If the guy who works the 14 hrs enjoys his job and consideres that a home and truely loves what he does then the other stuff bought are just side effects of a truely passionate love of career. In the second part does the guy living off interest enjoy driving his 10 year old car? If not why doesn't he get a job to buy that car. One that he enjoys. Too many variables. The side effect of not working is not knowing. Are those who do not work more in touch with their surroundings? How things work? Economies of scale? Does this interest them? Are they happy? Can they be happy?

The man living on the interest. My parents do this and so do I. My car is 20 years old and I own my modest house. I am a happy person.
