The answer is in your own question.
Just to ask it makes the difference.
Why did you, English, french, American, etc, fighter Hitler?
Why the French replaced an absolute monarchy by a Republic.
Why the Portuguese finished by force a dictatorship and started a Republican Democratic regimen?
Democracy is not perfect, there is a long way to go, but I don´t want to go back, I prefer to look ahead for a new democracy.

In the long run it only matters to the people at the top, in a proper democracy the top men can be voted out, in a dictatorship the way to retirement is very often by way of a knife or bullet.
As for the rest of us in the main we do as we are told regardless of what the government is

In a dictatorship, one person or group does the thinking for everybody else. In a democracy several people work and contribute ideas to acheive a goal. E Pluribus Unum "From Many One"

In a democracy you delude yourself that your vote makes a difference. (You think that I am joking? Check out the EU constitution. Two democratic countries voted against it, but it is being implemented bit by bit nevertheless)
In a dictatorship there is no pretence.

People are happier if they feel free.
Dictatorship is probably only better if you are in an all out, kill-or-be-killed war where someone has to make the hard decisions very quickly.
