The first recorded codification of the rules of cricket is the "Code of 1744". This specified that:

the pitch be 22 yards long,
the distance between the bowling crease and popping crease be 46 inches,
the wicket be 22 inches tall and 6 inches wide,
and the ball weigh between 5 and 6 ounces.

There is a 22 yard gap between two wickets and the bowling crease is apporx. 1 yard in front on the wicket, so the distance between the wicket and the bowling crease is 21 yard (approx.)

The distance is 4 ft (1.2 m), from the bowling crease to the popping crease.

Well to actually answer your question, there is NO gap between wickets and Bowling crease, Wickets are ON the bowling crease.
