This seems to be especially true with old b&w photos, which I work with the most. A scan will produce a perfect copy, but the coded version will be unrecognizable. I've tried adjusting contrast, etc... what is the secret?

When your saving the image you are most likely losing resolution. Check this first.

The otherthing could be that the scanned image is big say 1000x1000 and if you only allow the visable area to be 300x300 the phot will look crap

Post a link to the page so i can have a look,

If you are using html to change the image size (or if you are directly viewing the image in a browser that resizes the image to fit) the compression ratio is craptimizing the picture. You can either use Photoshop, etc. to resize the image properly, or you can display the full size image in your html.

If you have photoshop, you need to do a "Save for Web" under "File". Choose jpg or gif. It will properly compress and recode the image in a web format.
