St. John's Wort is not recommended for anxiety relief. It is an anti-depressant and mood elevator, effective for mild to moderate depression. It is widely used in Europe for this purpose and its use in the U.S. is growing. It is readily available OTC and not expensive. I used it for years with good results and no side effects. However, it should not be used in conjunction with other anxiety meds or SSRIs. If in doubt, check with your pharmacist. (I'd say doctor, but most doctors are unfamiliar with alternative medicine).

Please DO NOT try to make your own from wild plants. This is a very inexact science. OTC pills are standardized and safe. And I'm not saying it won't help with your anxiety. Experiment, but remember, it takes a couple of weeks for the effect to kick in.

I took St. John's Wort when I was feeling down in the dumps. The slight depression I had was from anxiety. I felt it helped pick me up a bit.
I would not advise trying to self medicate severe anxiety or depression by taking this.
Your best option is to see a qualified doctor or psychologist about your anxiety.

I could propose a homeopathic comfort, if I knew more about your signs; but my first bet is that you will have to take Ignatia Amara, in 30 or 200 potency if which you can get it. Which you can buy it online in case your regional health meals retailer would not have it. Now as to natural cures: Kava Kava may be very relaxing, you could take that; ardour Flower is good too. Valerian is a mild sedative. Or you might are trying Calms forte, which is homeopathic and on hand in most drug outlets; it is quite often used on kids, but it works simply as good on adults.

My husband uses it, he has chronic depression with suicidal ideations attributed to his cerebral palsy, and it seems to help without slowing him down as much as some of the rx meds do. He starts it in late summer and takes it through the winter to combat his seasonal affective disorder as well. He still gets 'down' times occasionally, but hasn't had an anxiety attack since he started it.

You'll spend more money on trying to swallow the "recommended" dosage of St.Johns Wort, than you will if you just go get a darn prescription.
I did try it for a while, felt no difference.
I've heard great things about Lexapro.
Good luck
