since they only have around 1 seat in the Senate, and since there are only a "handful" of Libertarians, etc, do they have any real use or influence?

If we had better elections, they would count, but or 'all or nothing' system rewards an entrenched two-party system.

Run-off (or better yet, instant run-off) elections would encourage diversity, without 'splitting the vote.'

Nations with more than two parties generally have higher voter turnouts than we do - because they have choices.

they have a real use but NO party has real influence. who has real influence are the lobbyists and special interest groups that pump money into the two party system.

since most third party candidates won't lower themselves to that (MOST), they have a tougher time.

I think they are gaining power. As they get more organized, they will have more power. The internet is helping them get their messages out too.

And, if they have even a "handful" of people, of course they have a use. That is what America is all about!
