I currently have a checking account with HSBC. I am moving to San Francisco and would like to know if I should stay with HSBC or find a more convenient local bank. (keep in mind who might have the most convenient ATMs so I can avoid the $2 fees every time I need cash)

When I moved to San Francisco, I kept my Washington Mutual account. There are a number of branches in the city. SF being what it is, it is sometimes a hassle to get around on public transportation, WAMU's policy of not charging ATM fees makes it more palatable to go to an outside ATM. I often use the CitiBank or B of A ATMs and only pay their fees ($1.50 or $2 -- not $4.50 like when WAMU used to charge). I will often pay the small fee rather than drive to WAMU. Another trick, Walgreens are everywhere. Buy a pack of gum using your ATM card and get $100 cash back. Cheers!

I believe Washington Mutual will refund any ATM withdraw fees. They are a much better bank than Bank of America. You will find some HSBC branches in the city, but not too many. Exchange Bank is another good local bank that will also refund ATM fees.

Consumers Report recently listed U.S. banks...Washington Mutual was one of the better ones for California. Were it not for its relatively few ATM's (compared to Bank of America), I would switch to them in a heart beat.

But for ATM's, Bank of America has overwhelmingly more ATM's than the second ranked bank. Their ATM's are just about everywhere in the U.S. Unfortunately, BofA rates quite low for other services (like teller waiting lines and loans). Also unfotunately, California has none of the top rated banks according to Consumer Reports.

Washington Mutual is the best, by far.
They have no fee accounts, branches all over town, and competitive rates on all their accounts, be that checking, CD, et. al.
I do not work for Wa. Mu., but have been a satisfied customer for many years.
