The only thing you're going to hurt is your pocketbook; your '97 Tracer would have no benefit from using synthetic oil; if anything, there's a possibility that it may develop an oil leak. I say, keep using the regular stuff, and save your money for a car that would benefit from the use of synthetic oil.

I'm a firm believer in synthetic oil. The cost is usually over-ridden by the frequency of oil changes diminishing. If the car has been in a climate that is fairly constant and desirable, the seals and gaskets should be in good condition. The only negative effect is the synthetic seeping slightly around these, but the benefits outweigh the risk of this.

Synthetic oil does a very good job, and on an older engine works well. But at 75k, you run the risk of the oil working so well that it may by-pass some of the oil seals, and begin to leak.
Just a HEADS UP.

Good Luck

will it hurt? no. Is it going to help? no. Save your money. Use conventional oil and change it on time.

sythetic is fine, just once you start to use it, always use it, a sythetic blend would probably be better. Sythetic oils lubricate and condition seals better than SAE oils.
