Not really, only because they will lose whatever benefits they may have now. If blacks are given reparations, the government can then say, "OK, there's your money. Now we wash our hands of the situation. We owe you nothing else. No financial aid (welfare, etc), no set aside programs for minorities, no affirmative action, nothing. You're on your own, pal." Unless blacks are ready to accept this, they should really think about this reparations thing.
but on the other hand, native Americans alive today were/are given compensation and none of the ones alive today were chased around by cowboys and the U.S. cavalry. So there is precedent for giving the decendents of a mistreated people compensation

can i get reparations too? my ancestors were quakers and lost everything land, money, social standing all because they helped get slaves to the north. they would buy the slaves then give them their freedom, money and transportation to the north. my ancestors were very rich in land and money but once they started helping the slaves the state levied exorbitant fines on them, took their land away acre by acre as a penalty, jailed them, they were beaten and some even hung in retaliation, the community turned against them. the wealth was gone within a decade and the family was left destitute and shunned....if the descendants of those same slaves they helped free and fund be compensated for their ancestors plight then why shouldn't my family and their descendants be made whole for their loss? its ironic that the hundreds if not thousands of whites who helped the abolish slavery by their actions are never mentioned or their destruction mentioned. slavery has been a world institution since time began and is still prevalent in many countries today, it is not only its victims that are hurt and used but those trying to stop it who are used and hurt too.

Wow. Mean answers, but I suppose you all are entitled. I don't think anything like that would ever ever happen in this country and the logic behind it is based on how the United States compensated Japanese Americans who suffered through Internment Camps as well as their descendants who didn't suffer and the U.S. also compensated Jewish Families as appeasement for their suffering the holocaust. So, I don't answer the should we be question because the we'll NEVER be truth is so so very overwhelming. Be nice people, gheesh! Hateful!

No, slavery is no more excuse 150 years + after the events ...
we live - mostly - in a free world where performance is necessary to achieve..
not government handouts....
we rather should be protecting the world from new instances of slavery, like in Sudan and other african countries, child labour and forced sex workers trafficking.
God is all about love and individuals, not skin colour and the past ...
God Bless you

Here is what they should do. A black person needs to trace their roots back to Afica, back to the actual tribe or village of their ancestors. Then they must find someone their own age and gender. They should then compare their wealth. If the African man is richer, the US should re-emburse that person the differance. If the African man is poorer, the person should re-emburse the US government the difference of their wealth.

Isn't that what Affirmative Action is? Trying to give some kind of reparations without offering direct cash or offending anyone? A political "meet you in the middle" without admitting fault?

No.
Back people in the U.S. today are descendents of slaves but were never slaves themselves, just like there are many whites who are the descendents of slave owners, but never owned a slave. Why should today’s generation pay for something that happened over 140 years ago?
