I told my daughter (18) I was thinking of going to see Madame Butterfly at the Met (Metropolitan Opera House in NYC) and did she want to go. I said we'll have to dress up.
She said I'll wear my prom dress (a gown). I said you can probably wear the dress you wore to your cousin's wedding (looks like a gown but short - very dressy)
What do you think?

I should have said that the dress she wore to the wedding was one she could have worn to the prom or on an evening out.

Somewhat like an updated version of the type of dress Audrey Hepburn wore in Funny Face or Breakfast at Tiffany's

Anything goes these days. In London people wear anything to the opera, from jeans right up to the full works (evening gown and furs, or fake furs I would hope these days!). I wouldn't break out the tiara but I would dress up a little, say a simple floor-length gown or a fussier shorter dress. Unless you're a bloke, of course, and even then people probably wouldn't bat an eyelid ;-) Have a lovely time!

Long plain dress .... I pay attention how people dress to the theater ... two extremes: one category is dressed in jeans and shirt, another category is too dressed up ... Those are dressed in the nice dressy dress (not wedding type of dress) look the best.
I think wedding dress and a theater are two different things. Dress nicely and elegant, but don't get overdressed. The key is elegancy.

I think a long dress with a sense of drama to it or an expensive looking top with dramatic skirt. Reds and Purples are good colours for an opera.

I don't know how people dress in New York, but at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, anything goes.
We see everything from tuxedos and evening gowns to jeans, t-shirts, sweats and sneakers.
Dressing up is fun, and it would certainly be appropriate.

If it isn't too revealing and looks decent. Don't go out and buy anything too elegant and old fashioned if you do decide to go get a new one. I just say work with what you have in the closet...even if it isn't a evening gown. Any dress will do!

No she can't wear her prom dress which is you said a gown. That was in the old times where everyone dressed extremely dramatic and formal. In our time, you should wear something really really nice, kind of serious chic, it can still be sexy but it can't be club sexy. You can wear your bold jewelry also. You can wear something like a cocktail dress, nothing frumpy or flamboyant.
Like if you want to wear something sparkly, don't wear sequin, instead wear something that has sparkly threads in the fabric.

A short dress should be fine as long it's fancy. Yes you definitely need to really dress nice for the opera.

You will need to dress very formal. Remember how Cher dressed when she was going to the opera with Nicolas Cage in Moonstruck?
That is how you will need to dress.
