Just thought I could try to figure it out too.
5y-y-7=2y+3
-2y-y-3=0
2y -4 =0
+4 +4
2y=4
y=2

5y -(y -7) = 2y +3
5y -y +7 =2y + 3
4y +7 = 2y +3
4y-2y = 3-7
2y = -4
2y/2 = -4/2
y = -2

well, take 2y off both sides to make it equal on both sides so you're left with 3y-(y-7)=3 then i'm not sure. If it means times by the bracket then......... o i give up. See if the answers are in the back of the book. Just remember, whatever you do to one side has to be done to the other.
i think the guy above got it correct, ignore me.

distributive property...
5y-5y^2 = 2y+3
then u want to get like terms on one side. so you take the 2y to the left, and it becomes a negative...so it's
5y-2y-2y^2=3
3y-2y^2=3
