By the time this game ended (in nail-biting, ulcer-inducing fashion, btw) the Sabres were able to field, by my personal count, 3 NHL-Quality defensemen: Jay McKee, Brian Campbell (my how times have changed) and Toni Lydman. For those who don’t know Henrik Tallinder left the game with 6 minutes to go (timing eerily coincidental with Lydman’s penalty) with what appears to be some kind of hand injury.

I can’t begin to talk about how this game went without focusing on this. Because, without the return of Teppo Numminen or Tri I don’t see a way for us to win this series, regardless of how it stands now in games. This is not to demean the efforts of guys like Fitzie and Jeff Jillson, but there’s no way they are going to be able to contain the Canes forwards for 4 more games without more help. While they are certainly gamers, and Jillson has the physical tools, both are going to get destroyed out there if asked to log more than 10 minutes. It was Jillson that was beat by Brinda’mour on the 3rd goal.
Speaking of Jillson, he played far better than I ever remember him playing in an AGH sweater. He was strong along the boards and made simple (and sometimes smart, accurate) outlet passes. It was good to see him on the PP giving Lydman and Tallinder a rest as well. He was a little out of synch with the rest of the Power Play but that’s to be expected. If I have a word of advice for him though, be more selfish…. SHOOT. There wer multiple setups made to him for one-timers that he passed on, moving the puck to the half boards instead. Sometimes too cute is the wrong play.

There’s a lot of talk out there (see the list on the Sabresreport front page) about the Sabres domination of the 2nd period. It truly was a dominating period of time and probably the best hockey I’ve seen them play all year. There’s really very little that needs to be said. They made a statement to the Canes that they can play just as big, mean, and skilled as they can and I think Carolina heard them loud and clear.

The 3rd Period was relatively quiet until the power play goal with 5 minutes to go, which surprised me, frankly. I expected Carolina to push harder than they did down by two. But, Buffalo’s defense was stellar, breaking up every rush, chopping the game into little bits and destroying any momentum the Canes tried to build shift to shift. Again, short shifts and relatively fresh legs were the order of the day. There was more play in the neutral zone of this period than in the 2.66 games played up to that point in the series.

BTW, Bret Hedican is really friggin’ good.

Points of Interest:

Novotny in for Vanek last night because Ruff wanted Roy back with Griere and Drury. I had contemplated that move during the Game 2 debacle but thought Vanek had played well enough to stay in the lineup. Team first, Thomas second and it was, as always, the right move by Ruff. Novotny had a decent game and Roy was everywhere.
Breier/Hecht/Dumont were the best players on the ice for either team last night and, I think, they were allowed to be first because of being at home, and second, because of the change to the Drury line.
If Connolly comes back for Game 4, we might not have to worry about the lack of defensemen very much as our three scoring lines will finally be on the ice and that will make life so much easier for our blueline.
Another excellent game by Miller between the pipes. I don’t credit him that often so it needs to be said.
This was Max’s best game in a while. I really think he and Derek Roy are a bad fit together anymore. Whenever Max is moved off of Roy’s line, he generates energy and scoring chances.
The 4th line was punishing people hard last night. I love the Playoff Edition of Taylor Pyatt. The Regular Season one though, can go back to Macy’s where it belongs. They did a great job in trying to even up the losses on our blueline by pounding the Carolina defense whenever they could. The hitting is beginning to create turnovers and transition for us.
Like my colleague D. Lee over at redblackhockey I thought the Canes were tilting out of control at the end of the first, thinking they could run Buffalo out of their building and mentioned it to Matt in IM between periods. Well, clearly that didn’t work at all. Cashing in on those two Power Plays set the tone for the next 20 minutes and we were the ones who nearly ran Carolina back south of the Mason/Dixon line.
I know players are really into the game and think they’re doing the right thing, but the incessant mouth-running at the officials after calls is getting completely out of hand. I’ve noticed it a lot in this series and, to my eyes (tinted as they are), the Canes are doing more of it than the Sabres. That’s usually a mark of a team in denial. If we can actually field an NHL quality defense we might be able to win this thing.
