Women, yes. Men, no. It's simple evolutionary genetics. Just like we have a drive to eat and avoid pain, we are hardwired to ensure survival of the species. This means men have a very strong drive to spread their genes (through sexual contact with as many as females as possible). Women, on the other hand, ensure their genes endure by providing a nurturing and safe home for their offspring. This involved (in less civilized times) having a man around to provide food and protection.

So now we are a "civilized" society and women can provide for children on their own, but our basic sexual drives still reflect our primitive ancestry. And if you look at other species, while some do mate for life, the vast majority are not monogamous.

Really, we're not just jerks that choose to stray. We have a very strong drive to do the opposite of what our puritanical society tells us. Just like we know we should not overeat, but the majority of Americans are overweight. Apparently, it takes a very strong person to be both thin AND monogamous :)

Biologically speaking NO!. Socially speaking, YES! else who would support the offspring? Single mothers do not have a pleasant home life. If man, and I am one, knew there were no consequences for their actions, the world would fill with single mothers. You are a woman. Consider that eventuality.

Yeah, we were MEANT to be, but being the flawed, imperfect people we are, we have a really hard time with it. I always said we should be more like penguins.

Nope. Biologically, monogamy makes for a very limited gene pool.

No. What percentage of mammals are? A very, very small percentage. Male mammals are programmed to spread their seed as widely as possible. I for one plan to keep trying!
