They are symbols for nature, and sex is a natural act. It's a way of referring to sex without SAYING "sex".

well do you garden?

I grew pumpkins this year (I'm kinda proud of that) and well lots! There is a male flower and a female flower and birds and bees come by and take the (sperm) pollen from the male and put it into the female flower. its kinda cool to watch =)

Parents use that because theyre too embarrased to be straight forward about the facts. theyre teaching grown up stuff in a very childish way.
