I'm currently in Americorps. No, it isn't hard to get in, you just apply for an Americorps position. It's basically like applying for any other job... you send your resume, get an interview...

There are pros and cons to Americorps. I'm in the VISTA program. All I can say is... it is extremely hard to live off what little they pay you. I barely bring home $700 a month from this job. You will get medical benefits though (I've actually never used mine), and depending what you asked for, either a $1,200 cash award after one year or close to $5,000 for student loans. I'm taking the loan offer.

It's a great resume builder, you'll also get a lot of responsibility... but it definitely sucks when all of your non-Americorps coworkers are making 5 times what you make, and you do the same thing. Non-profits apply to get Americorps people because it's basically like getting a free worker for them.

If the Americorps job you apply for really sounds interesting and you can afford to live on such a tiny amount (live w/ your parents if you can!) then go for it. It'll definitely give you some contacts later. You will also have to attend a few training seminars. (They provided free airfare and hotel for me.) I can't wait for my year to end though!
