Freedom, freedom & more freedom. Free people can secure themselves as they see fit. People who aren't free don't necessarily have the option of security. I'd rather be free and nervous about my surroundings than enslaved any day.

Obviously this is a decision based on the majority. I mean I'm not free to kill people, which lends some a measure of security. All criminal law, restricts freedoms and tries to ensure security.
As for the wiretaps. I think the law needs to be defined and that the executive branch must abide by it. At this point there's arguments that are solid on both sides.

Freedom.
Unfortunately you will find that the average American will disagree. Sad considering this nation was build in freedom and in fact there was always the quote "He who would sacrifice freedom for security deserves neither", which popped up during colonial times. Some argue that Ben Franklin said it himself but it seems the original author/orator is not concrete.
As a Libertarian I believe in non-interventionism unless we are directly under attack. None of this "pre-emptive" b.s.
When people pick security over freedom, they become more and more enslaved in their own laws. Nobody likes slavery, do they? (Except for the "masters" of course...)

With proper freedom the individual can provide their own security.

Our government just wants us to be scared into believing everything they say......that is why the words freedom and security are used so much. In reality it is all rhetoric and the politicians are more concerned with fattening their pockets, and becoming more powerful than they are with either freedom or security.....they have distorted the definitions of both words.
