first you need to consider if anybody regards gecko's as a pest. I think very few people do. Or did you ever see an ad offering to kill all the geckos in your house?
second you need to specify your question. Do you want to study the distribution of geckos in an urban area? You could compare various neighborhoods, especially some which have more garden areas compared to a prevalence of apartment blocks.
You also should figure out which species of geckos live in your area and you should be able to identify them.
You will need an extremely high tolerance for getting regarded as a strange weirdo. For when you start going from house to house in order to look for presence/absence of geckos you will have to ask the owner's permission. People will look at you very oddly indeed and some will think you just check the place out for whatever nefarious purpose their mind comes up with - and consequently throw you out. A lot people will be nice however, at least if you can tell them what your project is for and what its importance is. So make sure you can answer questions about your project in a coherent and meaningful manner.
You will have to develop some kind of criteria of how you decide there are geckos present.
You also should be able to deal well with sleep deprivation, for your work will have to be done at night.

Living with Geckos in and around our home... I do not consider them to be an infestation - what is it you want to study?

It all depends on what question your project is trying to answer.
