I don't know about free, but www.allofmp3.com has very, very low cost mp3s.

Very little is truly for free, except what is given (rather than taken). To be honest people have a right to be paid for what they do whether they're musicians, writers or music suppliers etc. We all have to make a living.
You can use peer to peer file sharing but you run a real risk of infection. Adware/spyware will not be the last virus around... Plus it's illegal. You probably won't get caught but it is a bit like unsafe sex, only nice if you get away with it.
It's a stiff market though and they want your money so shop around.
And remember that hoary old chestnut (which means it's annoyingly true) if it looks too good to be true - it probably is.

For those who hate to bother with p2p software, try http://mp3.baidu.com/
It's a Chinese site. But don't get upset when you see all those strange characters on this site, here is the detailed English instruction on how to download music from this site.
It's totally free and faster than p2p.

See how-to blew:

If you want to do it the legal way, there are new artists promotions on sites like amazon.com for free and with no strings attached. Otherwise, you have to buy your music.
If you want to scam the artists, there's always peer2peer networks... you can use programs like LimeWire which don't have any spyware.

Use a peer-2-peer file transfer program to download MP3s and then just transfer them to your player. I prefer eMule Plus.

Limewire
I would download it from download.com, I dont think you have to sign up, in the search engine just type ~limewire~ And there it is!

Fileshare would always be helpful and free. You could try downloading limewire or bearshare.
