It sounds like the linkage has gotten out of adjustment on the shifter going to the transmission. I'm not sure how yours is made but they all work basically the same when it comes to this. Try jacking the car up on a lift, where the cable or rod bolts to the transmission shifter arm, loosen the adjusting nut and pull it free. In your case this would be under the hood on the drivers side of the vehicle. That is if it's a front wheel drive american made car. Set the park brake or chock the wheels so it can't roll on you. With this cable/linkage rod loose move the shifter to the park position. You will now have to move the shifter arm on the transmission to the park position. Can't help you with this problem.

Except to suggest you chalk this one up to experience.

Next time read Consumer Reports before you buy a car.

The general axiom is:

If you like paying more and getting less, buy cars made by American Union workers.
If you want to pay more for quality without any assurance of reliability for the long term, buy a European car.
If you want to pay less for quality and reliability for a short-term car, buy Japanese.
If you feel lucky, buy anything else; Korean, Yugoslavian, Russian, Mexican . . .

So, the question is: "Do you feel lucky, punk, well do ya?"
